Yellow nutsedge in a Fox Chapel side yard is not a reason to spray the whole front lawn. On Western PA clay, that plant shows up where water sits. We see it along a downspout splash, a low bowl by a patio, or a head that never shuts off. Killing the sedge while the corner stays wet is a monthly subscription.

The corner that never dries is the file
Walk the lot after a normal irrigation cycle, not after a storm. If the same clay pocket is still shiny an hour later, that is the job. Photograph the wettest turf, the nearest downspout, and any head that throws into the bowl. A screwdriver that slides in like cake while the rest of the yard fights you is a drainage note, not a fertility note.
Nutsedge loves warm, wet clay. Cool-season turf in Wexford and the city lots does not. If you already treated and the triangles came back in the same footprint, the product did not fail as much as the water did.
Do not treat the open lawn for a wet rectangle
A broadcast pass across a dry, dense stand wastes chemistry and can mark turf you wanted to keep. We will flag the wet corner, the path from the downspout, and whether a buried French line or a simple extension would empty the bowl. Sedge control belongs on the wet plants, not on the Kentucky bluegrass that is doing its job.
If kids and dogs use the dry front yard, say so. Reentry and play should follow the treated strip, not a yard-wide lockout for a problem that lives in six hundred square feet.
Irrigation minutes can manufacture the weed
A rotor that soaks the same clay corner every night is growing nutsedge even when the rest of the program looks honest. We would rather cut minutes, fix a stuck valve, or move a head than stack another sedge visit. Irrigation notes and weed notes belong in the same conversation when the wet map and the plant map match.
Clay in Butler County packs. Water that cannot leave sits in the root zone. Aeration can help a sealed surface. It will not replace a downspout that dumps onto turf.
What we write on the ticket
Plant, wet footprint, and whether water is the lead or the plant is the lead. If we treat, the closeout should say the corner still holds water, or that the leak was assigned. Next August we compare that file instead of guessing why the triangles returned.
