A green spike in Pittsburgh clay is not a reason to spray tomorrow. Crews waste visits when the owner says "weeds" and means three different plants. Nutsedge likes wet, sealed soil. Crabgrass likes thin, hot openings. Ground ivy crawls from the shade line. Each one has a different window, and the wrong date is just a burn or a miss.

What we ask you to photograph
Get a close shot of the leaf and a wide shot of the pattern. Note if it is in a wet corner, along the driveway, or under trees. Write the last mowing height and whether a pre-emergent went down in spring. If you already treated and it came back in the same footprint, that matters more than the product brand on the jug.

Timing follows the plant and the clay
Pre-emergent timing is a soil-temperature story, not a calendar slogan. Post-emergent work on a sealed clay lawn can fail if the weed is stressed from drought or if rain is coming the same afternoon. We would rather wait two days than leave a half-rate on a plant that will shrug it off.
Seeding windows conflict with some weed products. If the lawn is thin enough that repair is the real job, say you want density, not just a brown weed. Lawn care and overseeding are related, but they are not the same line on the ticket. Aeration may be the first tool if the screwdriver will not go in. Separate control from rebuild
Killing crabgrass in a bare strip leaves dirt. Dirt grows the next flush. The scope should say whether we are cleaning plants, repairing turf, or both, and who waters after seed. Pets and kids belong on that note so the treated area is not a play zone the same afternoon.
Lime and fertilizer stay on their own evidence. Yellow turf is not automatic proof the weeds caused it. Shade, water, and traffic still have to be honest in the file.
